“Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?” Vu Bui, COO of Mojang (the game studio behind Minecraft) wrote in their blog post last June 27.

Minecraft, is a procedurally-generated sandbox game in which players harvest elements from the world by day to build tools and shelter to protect themselves from zombie attack at night. It made its first debut in 2009 and has become a defining video game experience for a generation. The game has sold over 100 million copies in the past seven years spreading from PC to mobile and console. Only the “Tetris” game surpasses it being the best-selling games of all time. Tetris also made its big announcement making a trilogy sooner or later.

Warner Bros Pictures is the official movie studio and Rob McElhenney (the creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will be the director for the upcoming movie. The plot of the Minecraft movie is still unknown but it is expected to be in a live-action. Minecraft movie is the latest game to be taken into a cinematic adaptation right after the successful Angry Birds movie which is in the cinemas already and became a box-office hit.

Although fans would seem disappointed for a three-years of wait, we will have to trust Vu Bui’s statement that the next three years of wait is worth it to make a completely awesome movie for all Minecraft fans around the world. The Minecraft is already under construction and with the awesome upcoming movies in the next few years, we won’t have to take a keen eye on our calendars for 2019.
